Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections are often used to treat low back pain and neck pain associated with radiating extremity pain. These injections are utilized to reduce the inflammation of the disc and /or the nerves. By reducing the pain, these injections will facilitate participation in physical therapy modalities and the reduction of pain medications.
Nerve Blocks
Nerve block procedures are utilized to block the pain coming from a certain nerve or even a group of nerves. There are several types of nerve block injections to treat acute pain, chronic pain, and cancer pain.
Neurolytic Nerve Blocks
A Neurolytic nerve block is a type of nerve block injection that utilizes neurolytic substances which reduces the nerves’ ability to transmit pain hence achieving longer-term pain relief rather than temporary or shorter-term relief.
Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a procedure that utilizes thermal /electric modalities that targets specific nerves to reduce the transmission of the pain signal. An electric current produced by radio waves is used to heat up a small area around the nerve tissue, thereby decreasing the pain signals transmitted from that specific area.
Joint Injections ( Including PRP Injections)
Joint injections are used to treat joint pain, most commonly arthritis but also pain related to injury, tears, or inflammation. The medications are injected directly into or around the inflamed tissue thus providing pain relief.
PRP injections are pain-reducing injections that utilize platelet-rich plasma that is withdrawn from the patient’s own blood. These injections are commonly utilized to treat sports injuries, damaged tendons, ligaments, and joints.
Spinal Cord Stimulator Implants
Spinal cord stimulators utilize thin electric wires implanted under the skin around the spinal cord to produce an electric signal thus controlling the transmission of pain within the spinal cord and other nerves. A small battery is also implanted under the skin and attached to wires that generate electric impulses which are controlled by the patient and tailored to their pain.
Infusion Pump Implant
An intrathecal infusion pump implant is openly used when other systemic pain medications and modalities have not provided significant pain reduction. The infusion pump is implanted under the skin and attached to a small catheter that delivers pain medications directly into targeted areas within the spinal cord to achieve pain control.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a technique that inserts thin needles into parts of the body, often used for pain management and stress management. The points stimulate nerves, muscles, and tissue, leading to an increase in the body’s natural painkillers. It can be used to treat several things such as headaches, back pain, neck pain, and chemotherapy-induced pain and nausea.
